Thrive Community Empowerment Initiative works with vulnerable communities, particularly refugees, women and young people, to strengthen practical skills and support sustainable livelihoods.
Our community work has included vocational training, enterprise development, financial literacy and engagement with women and young people. In Nakivale, our field research and community discussions have helped us understand how refugee women use existing skills, support dependants and seek opportunities to earn a living.
Our survey reached approximately 3,000 refugees, with 659 respondents analysed in detail. Women accounted for 493 respondents (74.8%). The survey identified tailoring and hairdressing among the skills women most wanted to develop, as well as strong willingness to undertake further training.
These findings build on our completed fieldwork and wider skilling activities. They provide the evidence for the next stage of livelihood support in Nakivale.

Proposed next phase. Women Grow & Earn is designed to support 60 refugee women aged 18–34 in Nakivale, particularly women with dependants and limited reliable income. The proposed training focuses on tailoring and hairdressing, supported by confidence building, functional English, enterprise and financial literacy, and smartphone-based business skills.
The programme is designed to prepare experienced participants to train other women. A proposed Kyaka Settlement component will profile skills and local livelihood opportunities before selecting future training pathways.
